| Vietnam welcomed 2.1 million foreign visitors in the first five months of the year, an increase of 16.6 per cent over the same period last year, according to domestic tourist agencies. In May alone, the country welcomed 400,000 foreign visitors, up 16.1 per cent over the May figure last year. Demand for travel by foreign visitors to Vietnam on the Liberation Day (April 30) and Labour Day (May 1) increased greatly. Ha Long Bay attracted more than 10,000 visitors per day, of which 80 percent were foreign visitors. Most foreign visitors to Vietnam in the first five months of the year came from Thailand, United States, Japan, China, South Korea, the Philippines, France, Singapore and Malaysia. China led the list with 352,000 visitors, up 54 per cent from last year, followed by the Philippines at 114,000 visitors, up 42 per cent, and 87,600 from Thailand, up 32 per cent. Hotels in the large cities such as Hanoi, HCM City, Nha Trang, Da Nang reported an average occupancy rate of 80 per cent, with even the most expensive hotels consistently booked to capacity. This year the Vietnamese tourism sector also hopes to welcome five million foreign visitors. It was estimated that this year the sector would bring VND62-64 trillion (US$4 billion) to the country, an increase of 14.3 per cent compared with 2007.
